The Dirtiest Martini

I created this set of illustrations for a magazine article about bartenders getting creative to punch up the dirty martini.

For the hero image, I visually exaggerated the olive-ness of a dirty martini, reflecting how bartenders seek to exaggerate that flavor in their drinks.

For the spots, I imagined characters who treat briny ingredients as a way of life.

Overall, I wanted the visuals to reflect the playfulness and creativity that bartenders describe in the article.

Editorial (self-directed)

The two-color spot illustrations each highlight a special ingredient mentioned in the article. I wanted to create characters who are vibing with their ingredient, and looking really cool doing it.

Visual exploration:

I started with the idea that the hero image would depict a bartender character, but I preferred the more minimal compositions. I also tested different ways to exaggerate the olives.

Ultimately, I felt most excited by the playful energy of one giant olive with some extra olives as garnish.
